Busy times at Over Farm:

storms, heatwaves, bats, moths, trenches, pumpkins AND rolled ankles – all in one week!

It’s been a busy week here at Over Farm with lots of jobs to get through…

Digging to plant trees and for new trenches

On Monday I was in the driver’s seat of the digger to plant our brand new Liquidambar styraciflua Worplesdons (or orange-leaved trees to you and me). They’ll look amazing at the entrance to our pumpkin experience.

While I had the digger out I spent some time making a new trench to reroute the old water mains that used to feed our chickens 20 years ago.

Annoyingly, when I jumped down into the hole, I managed to roll my ankle (no, that’s clay in the picture – not my blood!). There’s a bit of swelling though so I’m now limping from job to job, and struggling to keep up with Ralph and Connie even more than normal!

(Anyone got any tips for fast ankle recovery?!)

Work continues for pumpkins

Between digging and limping, work has continued on the new bar and food hall area for our Pumpkin events next month – it’s really starting to look special in there!

Really hope everyone likes it as much as we do, this is definitely the biggest we’ve gone for Pumpkin PYO and Pumpkins After Dark in Over Farm’s history, a little nerve-wracking but very exciting to see.

Electrical storm – did you see it?!

Perhaps you caught the crazy electrical storm over Radnor way. A good dumping of rain is great for the farm but we couldn’t believe what we were seeing, it was like end of the world scenes.

Speaking of end of the world scenes…

Box Tree Moth Armageddon

We’ve also been dealing with the clear-up of the Box Tree Moths that have been tearing our box bushes apart recently.

No, we didn’t kill them – the bats did!

Kate and I spent an hour watching five bats going mad for the moths over our garden in the heat last week, and the remnants that littered the grass the next morning were somewhat grim.

Still, the box bushes will be relieved!

Another heatwave please

That quickfire heatwave was rather nice though, wasn’t’ it? I don’t ever remember having pre-school run breakfast outside in September before, but there we were!

Let’s hope the sun comes back out for the weekend when Countryside Adventure will be for fun and games on the farm again!

Hope you’re having a great week [not hampered by moth carcasses or twisted ankles].

Much love,

Rees
